UNITS OF THE CANADIAN
ARMY
1939-1945
Canadian Infantry Corps |
The main element of every army throughout history has been the infantry. By 1939, there were three types of infantry regiments in the Canadian forces - rifle, tank and machine gun. Tank regiments converted to armour during the war and became part of the Canadian Armoured Corps. Some Machine Gun regiments mobilized rifle battalions (which did not add the MG designation to their title). Some infantry regiments were also converted to armour during the war.
On 2 Sep 1942, the Canadian Infantry Corps was formed, primarily as an administrative entity to train and hold reinforcements for its component regiments.
